CAS Education Programs (5th year MEd and BA/BS)

The Department of Education prepares students for teacher licensure in
three general areas:

* PreK-6 (elementary education)
* PreK-12 (elementary/secondary education) which include Art, Music and
Foreign Language (French, German, Latin & Spanish)
* 6-12 (secondary education) which include Biology, Chemistry, Computer
Science, Earth Science, English, History and Social Sciences,
Mathematics, and Physics

The elementary education program is a Master of Science program.
Students complete licensure requirements and earn a M.S. degree in
elementary education after completion of a fifth (post-BA/BS) year. The
secondary and elementary/secondary programs can be completed during a
four-year BA/BS program.

Participation in the Education Program at the University of Mary Washington provides:

* Strong preparation in the liberal arts and sciences,
* Course work linked to extensive experience in public school classrooms,
* Training in and classroom practice with computers, digital cameras, scanners, and laser disk players,
* Access to an extensive collection of textbooks and other classroom resource materials,
* The opportunity to participate in education organizations such as the Student Education Association (SEA) and Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), an international education honor society.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program is by application directly to the Department of Education. Students who desire admission must do the following:

1. Enroll as a degree seeking student at the University of Mary Washington;
2. Attend a Group Information Session offered by the department;
3. Achieve a 2.5 Overall Grade Point Average with a minimum of 12 UMW credit hours; and
4. Complete and submit an application for admission into Education 203/204*, Introduction to Teaching and Learning.

Application for admission to the fifth year of the M.S. program will take place during the first semester of your fourth year.
